Will we ever truly know what happened at 1122 King Road?

It is hard to believe that this Nov. 13 will mark three years since the grisly deaths of four University of Idaho students at their off-campus rental home.

By now, most of us thought we would have a definitive idea on what took place in that three-story home in the early morning hours of Nov. 13, 2022. Sadly, we are no closer today to knowing exactly what happened.

Sure, many people believe Bryan Kohberger, through his admission, went into the home in the early morning hours and stabbed to death Maddie Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin.

For other people, they believe Kohberger was never even in the residence and had zero to do with the deaths of the four students.

Honestly, I fall into the middle category here.

While I feel Kohberger was involved, my gut has told me for a while now that Kohberger had help or helped others kill these four young adults.

Yes, like a thief in the night, Ted Bundy notoriously killed young women in a very short amount of time. That said, those instances are not the norm. The majority of killings minus a gun, especially when taking out four lives, take some time.

MPD photo drop opens up door of questions

Over the last week or so, the Moscow Police Department had begun dropping photos online from the crime scene. While certain imagery was blurred out (presumably bodies or pictures on walls of people still living), much of the released photos left many of us scratching our heads. Given police had described this as one of the bloodiest scenes they had ever encountered, where in fact was the majority of the blood?

One photo appears to show the bed on the third floor where Goncalves and Mogen died. A bloody pillow presumably being used by the former has ample blood on it. There were reports Goncalves’ face was beaten so severely that she was unrecognizable to police when they arrived. Whether true or not, we can tell just by this image alone it was bad in that bedroom.

On the second floor, the bodies of Kernodle (on the floor) and Chapin (in her bed) were discovered by a friend known as Hunter. Kernodle appeared to have put up quite a struggle with the perp/s. Chapin was apparently rendered incapacitated before he could put up much of a fight.

As with any such big crime investigation like this one, questions are expected and downright necessary.

I continue to have questions about this case and will not shy away from asking them. Among some of them are:

  • Why apparently did neither surviving roommate (Dylan Mortensen or Bethany Funke) go up to the third floor over some eight hours to check on Mogen or Goncalves? This is especially worth asking after Mortensen reported seeing a masked intruder in the home in the very early morning hours that Sunday.
  • With all the photos (around 200 or so were reportedly being released) MPD was putting out there, where is a photo of the sheath that Kohberger supposedly left behind? Police would have it in their possession. So, why hasn’t the public seen it yet?
  • Where are police body cams from that day at the house? MPD had video of at least two prior visits to the home for noise complaints. Would they not have the cams rolling upon coming to a situation at the home they were not clearly able to define ahead of time? What if the killer or killers had still been in the home? Would police not want to document their initial arrival to the home and walking around it inside? Could the time stamps on the body cams not match up with the 911 call?
  • While the mattresses appeared to have soaked up a fair amount of the blood from all four victims, the type of knife used and the many dozens of stab wounds should have meant notable blood on the floors, walls etc. Yet, we don’t see that in most of the images. We think that might be a pool of blood next to Kernodle on the floor, though one poster on X said it could be a rug. Given the image is blurred out almost in its entirety, hard to say what we are looking at.
  • Why don’t we know where the remains of the home when demolished in December of 2023 were taken? Yes, one report said authorities were worried about thieves trying to get their hands on this or that piece of the home and put it on eBay etc. I would assume the home’s remains would be taken to a secure location. Yet, media for most part has never asked what happened here. I wonder about it. Were the remains buried in a landfill and no one is saying? Were the remains burned somewhere?
  • Finally, where is video of Kohberger’s white vehicle CLEARLY shown either driving up to/leaving the home or driving back to Pullman (Washington) in the early morning hours? You would think somewhere there would be a camera that CLEARLY caught his vehicle and its Pennsylvania plate (rear only in the Commonwealth). Yet, more than two and a half years later, we do not see it.

While this case is over for many people, many others like myself still have questions.

Yes, the questions will continue to come until the answers make sense.

What questions would you have as a Kohberger jury member? (Part 2)

We think there will be a trial this August in the State of Idaho vs. Bryan Kohberger quadruple murder case.

It was Nov. 13, 2022 when Kaylee Goncalves, Maddie Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin were discovered murdered at 1122 King Road in Moscow, Idaho. The slayings of the four University of Idaho students shook the community and beyond.

Shortly after Christmas, Kohberger, a Washington State University grad student, was arrested across the country in Pennsylvania for the four murders and a charge of felony burglary.

Given Kohberger refused his right to a speedy trial, the case has dragged on some two and a half years. If the trial does begin in early August, it will be a welcome relief for many people.

That said, what questions would you have in this case if you were a sitting jury member later this summer?

Among the questions I would want answered by the prosecution and defense would be the following:

  • Why did BK as it appears take a photo of himself at home in his bathroom only hours after the m*rders took place? I take my share of selfies over time. That said, I know of only one of mine taken in the bathroom and I was being goofy in the photo.
  • Did any female students at Washington State University where BK was a grad student ever report him to be creepy or even st*lking them?
  • Why was a knife used in the m*rders and not a gun? While a gun certainly can make more noise at the moment it is fired, many people can be taken out with a single bullet. A knife attack unless hitting a main artery or slashing the throat tends to be messier and can be noisier. That is especially if the victim is trying to fight back.
  • Is there any video or cell phone photos of Xana and Ethan from approximately 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 12-13? They were reportedly at his frat for a period of time. Xana’s dad also supposedly talked to her at some point by phone then.
  • What is it that Maddie supposedly told bartender Adam as has been oftentimes mentioned? Was it something that could have led to one or more individuals wanting to harm her?
  • What is the best guess to the order of the four dying? Knowing the order could better define if one of the four was in fact the intended target.
  • Could any of the four possibly been saved with immediate medical attention? Given all the commotion going on in the middle of the night, was Dylan aware or not something bad had happened? She supposedly saw a masked intruder in the home. If that is true, why not go check on your roommates once safe to do so and not nearly eight hours later? My gut still tells me that one or more of the victims likely bled out. I doubt we will truly ever know if one or more had a chance if given fast help. Even the medical experts can’t say with 100 percent certainty.
  • Finally, why did no neighbors apparently hear or see anything when the m*rders went down? Although the reported timeline was the middle of the night, that neighborhood is very condensed. One would think someone heard or saw something coming from the area of the home.

If you were a juror and talking in a closed sessions with your fellow jurors, what would you want most to know or have clarified before rendering a verdict?

What questions would you have as a Kohberger jury member? (Part 1)

  • Was Bryan Kohberger infatuated with any of the victims in the home? If yes, which one and why?
  • Had BK ever come in contact with any of the victims before Nov. 13, 2022?
  • Was it common for BK to drive around in the middle of the night? If so, what was typically the reason for this?
  • Why was BK’s phone on prior to the murders and then off for a period of time before going back on?
  • If BK is the correct person charged with these murders, why does it appear he was not injured nor had any known blood in his vehicle or apartment tied to the case?
  • What is the exact timeline police believe these killings took place? While it is possible for one individual to commit such crimes, it has been thought the timeline could be under 15 minutes. That is not much time to cover two floors in relative darkness, meet some resistance, and then do some cleaning up of the scene.
  • What was the order of death for the victims? Although it has been guessed, I do not ever remember seeing exact confirmation of this key detail. Knowing the order could narrow down if in fact one person was targeted or it was a random burglary and murders scene.
  • Why did surviving roommates Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke wait nearly 8 hours to call for help? This after Mortensen had reportedly spotted a masked intruder on the second floor during the event.
  • It is alleged that Mortensen heard a male say something along the lines of “It’s OK, I’m going to help you” in relation to words said in the area of Kernodle’s second floor bedroom. Say for a moment that was the killer talking to Kernodle or Chapin who well could have been seriously wounded by now. Would a masked intruder say that to a victim and expect them to believe help had arrived? Why would the killer take the mask off and say that to a victim?
  • What was happening with Kaylee’s dog, Murphy, during the eight or so hours from the believed timeline of the murders to when 911 was called and police arrived? Are we to believe a young dog would simply sleep for the most part through all this?
  • Did neither Mortensen nor Funke go up to the kitchen on the second floor for food all morning before help came? Hard to believe that was the case. If one or both went up to the kitchen, did they not stop and knock on Kernodle’s door or wonder where the two roommates on the third floor were? One of my big questions for many months now, WHY NOT GO AND CHECK/GET THE TWO OLDEST WOMEN IN THE HOUSE DURING ALL THIS TIME? THAT IS ESPECIALLY AFTER SEEING A MASKED INTRUDER IN THE HOME AND ENDLESS CALLS AND TEXTS TO KAYLEE AND MADDIE GOING UNANSWERED. I STILL HAVE NEVER UNDERSTOOD THAT.
  • Why would Kohberger leave a non-death penalty state like Washington and drive across to death penalty state Idaho and allegedly murder four students? Keep in mind Washington State University has around double the student population of the University of Idaho. As such, there would be plenty of female targets for him at Wazzu and even within walking distance. Why risk going across the border on a Saturday night/Sunday morning when local police would be out looking for say drunk drivers, noise offenses etc. on and around the campus in Moscow?

Those are just “some” of the questions I would want answers to. There will be more to come.

So, what questions would you want clear answers to if you served on the jury?

Would you convict Kohberger with what you know now?

We are still a number of months away from a trial for quadruple m*rder suspect Bryan Kohberger.

With that in mind, how confident are you in his guilt or innocence?

I have said since the day he was arrested in late 2022 that there certainly was a chance he was guilty. Authorities had to have enough reason to go and arrest him. Otherwise, he would have continued on with his life in Pullman, Washington or continued to spend time with his parents in Pennsylvania where he was ultimately taken into custody.

That said, Kohberger has been in custody now for more than two years. Given he refused the option of a speedy trial, he continues to be in custody in Idaho awaiting what many hope will be a summer trial.

So, as we wait on the trial, how convinced are you authorities have the right individual and that justice will ultimately prevail?

There is certainly going to be circumstantial evidence against Kohberger that could lead to a conviction.

Among the things he and defense most need to worry about:

  • Reported link to him to DNA on the knife sheath found in Maddie’s bed
  • His car reportedly being in the vicinity at the time of the m*rders
  • His cell phone reportedly pinging multiple times in the area of the home
  • Being unable to provide a solid alibi to where he was at the time of the m*rders
  • Reportedly buying a similar knife some 8 months prior to the tragic event.

Among the things the prosecution should be concerned about:

  • As of now, no clear eyewitness accounting of him/his exact vehicle in or near the home at the time of the m*rders
  • A definitive link between him and the victims
  • Reported DNA traces of other individuals found under a fingernail from Maddie
  • Surviving roommates strange actions for up to some 8 hours following the reported times of death for the victims
  • A jury not having been allowed to see the home for themselves. I don’t care how many pictures, videos, models etc. the authorities come up with. It is not the same as seeing it first-hand. Even though we were told jurors were not going to have been allowed to go inside if the home was still up, seeing it from the outside alone could be telling. I was to the outside of the home twice in 2023 and it gave me a different perspective than what I saw on TV
  • No notable past crime record for Kohberger.

I could see Kohberger getting convicted and escaping the death penalty in the sentencing phase of the trial.

I could also see this ending up in a mistrial and we are back to square one.

At the end of the day, here’s hoping they get it right for all our sakes.

When did a quadruple murder of college students become comedy hour?

For those of us who’ve followed the Idaho 4 case closely over the last eight-plus months, the emotions have been far-ranging. I’ve been in journalism for more than three decades and this case baffles me to this day.

Many of us want to see a resolution to the case. That may or may not mean defendant Bryan Kohberger is convicted.

As I have said repeatedly, if in fact Kohberger is the person responsible and is convicted in a fair trial, by all means throw the book at him. If he had help (which I believe could be a strong possibility if he was involved, as I think it took more than one person to do this evil), those other people need to be held accountable. In the event he had nothing to do with it, he needs to be found not guilty at trial.

With all that to think about down the road at trial, I’d like to discuss something else with the case.

A group on Facebook known as University of Idaho Murders – Case Discussion (run by Alina Smith) has been getting a fair amount of attention of late and not necessarily good.

While I spent several months in that group, the light dawned in my head recently that this group was not the serious group it portrays itself to be. I would also seriously question that it has 222k members. My guess is more in the thousands, especially since many of the same people post again and again and again.

All that aside, what is most disturbing is that Ms. Smith has allowed her group to become open mic night for those auditioning for Comedy Central. Here are but a few of the most recent offerings to show up on their site. These include:

Hey, everyone enjoys humor at times whether it be a TV show, comedy club, telling jokes among family and friends etc. On the flip side of the coin, there is a right time and place for such stuff.

Given some family members of the four deceased students are known to visit the above group page, including a sister of one of the victims, wonder if they find the sophomore humor funny? My guess is the answer would be no.

What could be a solid discussion page on a case many of us are riveted to has turned into comedy, middle school drama and more. As you can see in one of the posts above, Ms. Smith is clearly aware of what is going on given she provided a response.

Thankfully, there are some other Idaho 4 discussion groups out there willing to stick to the case 99 percent of the time and ban such childish stuff. To those groups, I salute you and I know many other people do too.

How about that other group go back to focusing on the case itself, allow both sides of the case to be discussed in an adult manner, and we ultimately get a resolution for the four victims and their families?

Meantime, if you want some humor, go support the comedians at your local comedy club who I am sure would greatly appreciate it.

If you can’t run a serious Idaho 4 discussion page …. might be time to take it down.
